Spelling to Communicate (S2C)
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is an augmentative and alternative (AAC) method that teaches non-speaking, minimally speaking, and unreliably speaking individuals with motor planning difficulties, the motor and visual skills necessary to point to letters on a letter board, keyboard, and/or voice output device to spell for communication.
Presuming competence is a key feature of Spelling to Communicate. We presume that all individuals at Amplifying Potential Therapy can and want to learn, regardless of their motor limitations. We provide access to age-appropriate content, teaching individuals to respond to cognitive questions of increasing complexity, with the goal of access to robust, open-ended communication that they may not be able to access with their verbal speech or icon-based AAC device.
Amplifying Potential Therapy has a certified S2C practitioner on staff, who has completed the rigorous, six month training program and internship through The International Association for Spelling as Communication. We serve spellers of all ages and skill levels, both individually and in groups. We also train communication partners for our spellers, so they can spell across a variety of settings with multiple family and staff members.
APT is a unique clinic, in that we utilize a cross-disciplinary approach, incorporating our diverse expertise in the areas of S2C, speech-language pathology, AAC, occupational therapy, and visual rehabilitation to support spellers on their journeys to open communication. We have extensive experience with moving open spellers to independent (i.e. flat on the table, using a stand, fading communication partner support), open communication using keyboards and voice-output devices, employing an individualized approach that best supports the speller’s motor, regulation, and visual needs.
